Hi, Brian. Excellent article. I've been following this trend for quite a while now, noting the lack of useful design management integration for hardware design.

I think the sentence "IC Manage took a different approach, deciding to leverage the open source SCM world, putting a hardware layer over Perforce." is a bit misleading. Perforce isn't open-source. Did you mean instead to describe VersIC/MethodIC's in that way, since they did layer their DM on top of subversion (which is open-source)?

FYI: When I was at Motorola Labs, I wrote a round-about way to use subversion from the Cadence interface (I wouldn't call it integration--which *is* what VersIC gives you). It's here:

Bryon wrote an article (click here) about Design Management. What do you think?

Hmm... you have a point, Poojan

I conflated the issues of layering a hardware DM system on top of a software one, which is the case with Perforce, and that of open source, which, you're correct, does not apply to Perforce.

The issue of adapting a software system to hardware is the principle one, but your clarification is correct.
